They invite the viewer to wander visually through the scenes they present, like a landscape invites the viewer to imaginatively wander into their landforms. They might also seem reminiscent of a dancer’s swirling skirts, as these iris blooms suggest to me. Pinks and blues are such wonderful colours to paint in, so tender, and so pleasant to view.

A frame can be added. ‘Tulipomania’, or ‘Tulip Mania’, refers to a phenomenal cultural period when Dutch and British elites collected tulips from Ottoman Turkish rulers. Tulips became so expensive in Holland, that it sent the economy into a spin. Paintings of them and other highly-prized flowers were far less expensive to purchase, and hence the botanical paintings of the Dutch Enlightenment also became hot collector’s items. I aim to allude to the opulence of and fascination with tulips in my Tulipomania series. Parrot tulips are one of my favourite subjects to paint, due to their extraordinary shapes and patterning.

Flora presenting fluid lines and sculptural forms that lend an abstract quality to an artwork are of most interest to me. I found these tulips at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The series title ‘Tulipomania’ alludes to an era when collectors paid exorbitant prices for tulips. It is based on a scene at the Chicago Botanic Garden, using some artistic licence. I aimed at producing a vivid contrast between the ‘hot’ yellows and golds of the autumn foliage and the ‘cold’ whites of the birch trunks and snow. Australian Flora in Green and Pink

The most familiar kind is red, and is the floral emblem of New South Wales. In this painting, pale yellow-green waratahs with long sepals display themselves in elegant confidence, framed softly by kangaroo paws and eucalyptus pods.

Sunlit Gumleaves, Blue Mountains

Sunlight filters through the new growths of spring gumleaves (eucalyptus) in the Blue Mountains, to create a brilliant pattern of greens, golds and apricots. Near my family home in Australia, this is one of my favourite areas for bush-walking and enjoying nature.

Tulipomania: Red and Yellow

Vivid swirls of red and yellow form petal shapes that merge into one another in an exuberant burst of life. ‘Tulipomania’, or ‘Tulip Mania’, refers to a time when collectors of exotic flora paid exorbitant prices to possess tulips. This painting suggests a sense of the opulence, excitement and excesses of that era, as well as drawing attention to the stunning beauty of flowers. USD 3,750. Also available in prints.

Autumn Forest

Tulipomania 7: Pink and Yellow Parrots

Soft pastels on museum-quality wooden board, 18” x 24” / 40.1 x 51 cm. The beautifully flowing shapes and patterns of these parrot tulips inspired this artwork. Flora presenting fluid lines and sculptural forms that lend an abstract quality to an artwork are of most interest to me. I found these tulips at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The series title ‘Tulipomania’ alludes to an era when collectors paid exorbitant prices for tulips. I hope my paintings portray something of the beauty of tulips that inspired such fascination in those long-ago enthusiasts! USD 1,790, unframed (pastels must be framed under glass).

Birches in First Snow, 3

Soft pastels on museum-quality wooden board, 18” x 24”. Requires framing under glass. This pastel drawing/painting was inspired by autumn birch trees in the first snowfall of the cold season. It is based on a scene at the Chicago Botanic Garden, using some artistic licence. I aimed at producing a vivid contrast between the ‘hot’ yellows and golds of the autumn foliage and the ‘cold’ whites of the birch trunks and snow.
